Four routes, what each actually involves, and how long each realistically takes. Including the ones that cost nothing — and the one we are connected to, said plainly.
An estimated 5,180 adults in Coventry are alcohol dependent. Only a fraction are in treatment of any kind. Part of that is stigma and part is readiness — but a real part is simply that the routes are confusing, and most pages explaining them are written by someone who wants you to pick one particular option.

Change Grow Live is Coventry's commissioned drug and alcohol service. Assessment, keywork, community detox support, healthcare clinics, group programmes, needle exchange, family support and aftercare — all free. You can refer yourself; you do not need to see a GP first.
NHS hospital support
Typical wait: Immediate, if you are admitted
University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire has a specialist Alcohol Care Team supporting people admitted with alcohol-related problems. This is a route into treatment that many people arrive at without planning to — through A&E rather than a referral form.
Council-funded residential rehab
Typical wait: Usually months
Local authorities can fund residential placements, but it is not automatic. You would normally need to be engaged with community treatment first, complete a full assessment, and then have a funding panel agree. It is means-tested and needs-led.
Private residential treatment
Typical wait: Days
Admission is usually possible within days rather than months, and does not depend on a panel. The trade-off is straightforward: it costs money. For people in work with responsibilities they cannot pause for six months, that speed is often the whole point.

How funding actually works
This is the part almost nobody sets out clearly, probably because it is not encouraging. It is worth knowing anyway.
Engage with the free community service first
Funding panels expect community treatment to have been tried. In Coventry that means Change Grow Live, and you can refer yourself — you do not need to see a GP first.
Comprehensive assessment
The local drug and alcohol team carries out a full assessment of your needs, history and circumstances.
Local authority funding panel
A panel decides whether to fund a residential placement. It is means-tested and needs-led. It is not automatic.
Decision
If approved, a placement is arranged. Timescales are typically measured in months rather than weeks.
Eligibility tends to weight housing risk, benefits status and acute vulnerability. Many people in stable work with a mortgage will not qualify for funded residential treatment. That is the gap private care fills — and it is worth knowing before you spend months waiting to find out.

Private treatment
What you are actually paying for
Mostly, you are paying for time and for staffing. Admission in days rather than months. A medically supervised detox with someone watching. Therapy every day rather than fortnightly. And a bed that exists because you paid for it, not because a panel agreed you were vulnerable enough to need one.
The Wellbourne Clinic has 6 beds and is in Kenilworth, 6.5 miles from Coventry — about 15 minutes. It is registered with the Care Quality Commission under registration 1-17718051901. The service was registered in October 2023 and has not yet been inspected, which is worth knowing and worth checking for any clinic you consider.
Being close matters more than it sounds. Family can attend sessions without an overnight stay, and aftercare afterwards is local rather than a phone relationship with a clinic in another county.
