Coventry's drug figures
Coventry records 8.7 deaths from drug misuse per 100,000 people, against an England average of 5.8 — around half as much again as the national rate. Warwickshire, by contrast, sits at 4.7, below the England figure.
The harder number is treatment outcomes. Coventry’s successful completion rate for opiate treatment is 3.5% against 5.3% nationally. More harm, and worse results for people who do reach services.

By substance
Treatment is not the same for every drug
Opiates — heroin and opioid painkillers. Withdrawal is rarely life-threatening but is severe enough that most people relapse to stop it. A managed withdrawal makes the difference between getting through it and not.
Benzodiazepines — prescribed or otherwise. Withdrawal can cause seizures and must be tapered slowly under medical supervision. Stopping abruptly is dangerous.
Cocaine and stimulants — no medical detox usually required, which misleads people into thinking treatment is unnecessary. The dependence is psychological and the relapse pattern is stubborn; treatment focuses on therapy rather than withdrawal.
Cannabis — withdrawal is real but mild. Where it matters most is alongside anxiety, low mood or psychosis, which is where dual diagnosis treatment becomes relevant.

Assessment first, then a managed detox where the substance requires one, then the therapeutic work — individual and group sessions examining what the drug use is doing for the person, and what could do it instead. Aftercare planning happens before discharge, not after.
